THE NORTHWEST BRONX COMMUNITY

NWBCCC's community is made up of the people who live, work and worship in the Northwest Bronx (bounded by the Cross Bronx Expressway on the south, Southern Boulevard on the east, city limits on the north, and the Harlem River on the west).  For thirty-three years, we have maintained the Iron Rule – never do for others what they can do for themselves.  Our members are the media spokespeople, chairpersons and presenters at all of our public meetings, and negotiators with all targets.  NWBCCC has both Individual Members and Affiliated Organizations, with the leadership of both mirroring the demographic composition of the Northwest Bronx.

In the four city council districts that encompass the Northwest Bronx's 450,000 residents, poverty rates range from 18% to 42%, official unemployment rates go from 10% to almost 21%, with single parents leading 30% of households in three of those districts. In 2000, 60.5% of men and 50.5% of women were considered to be in the labor force. The median income for all households was $27,379. For single female-headed households, however, the median income was $17,133. Of all households with children under 18 years of age, 37.3% had incomes below the poverty line. Almost 53% of all families received Supplemental Security Income or public assistance. For single female-headed households, 52.5% with children under 18 live under the poverty line, as did 62.8% of those with children under five. Half of the residents of the Northwest Bronx are foreign born, with sustained immigration from the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean matched with dramatic growth in West African, Mexican and Central American, and Eastern European communities. Approximately 65% of our community is Latino, with 20% African American, 10% White, and 5% Asian and other. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)
