The Leadership Institute is a school that was designed and created by community youth leaders from Sistas and Brothas United (SBU) in partnership with Fordham University. It is part of the New Visions Small School Initiative and is in its fourth year with 9th and 10th and 11th graders. This year will be our very first graduating class!!
The mission of the Leadership Institute is to provide students with an excellent college-preparatory education rooted in the concepts of leadership, community action, and social justice. A focus on leadership prepares youth to take charge of their lives and be active, engaged participants in their communities. An emphasis on community action encourages youth to take action to bring about significant change collectively and cooperatively. A focus on social justice helps students clarify their values and understand their rights and responsibilities in a democratic society. These concepts are important educationally because they make learning relevant, challenging, and engaging. They require students to take ownership of their education, and help them learn to work with others, think critically, and engage with the world around them.
At the Leadership Institute, we believe students are educated best when learning is hands-on and is connected to real life experiences, and they enjoy an equitable setting where differences are celebrated and there is a strong sense of community and ownership in the school.
Equally important, the school is committed to community action projects both in the school and in the wider community. Students and teachers work collectively to identify and develop projects that contribute to positive change and enhance the student’s leadership skills.
